(Hosting-NewsWire.com, September 16, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA - Matt Mullenweg made history when he developed the first ever online publishing tool, WordPress, with the help of his associates. Today, his success can be seen almost everywhere. Out of every six websites on the internet, one is powered by WordPress.
There are nearly 60 million websites powered by this software, and close to 100,000 are popping up every day. The numbers do not end there. Many more websites run via its cloud-host service, through which anyone can make a free website online. This host-cloud allures 330 million visitors, who see 3.4 billion web pages each month.
Moreover, WordPress VIP is now a default-publishing tool for several prominent media companies’ websites. Still, one asks this question, is Mullenweg a billionaire? It has been a little more than seven years since Mullenweg formed his company “Automatic” along with investors Toni Schneider and Tony Conrad. Yet, they have still not earned the amount of money one would expect from a company whose software is everywhere.
The reason is simple. They work for free. Only a small percentage of WordPress.com users actually pay for services. “Automatic” is earning roughly 1% of any revenue from WordPress.
Despite the data, Schneider (CEO of Automatic) insists that his company is still lucrative. He also said the sales of Automatic double each year since its inception in 2005. However, stats on the other hand tell a different story, as Mullenweg and Schneider’s company depicts just $45 million sales in 2012. The number is not an impressing figure as compared to its enormous footprint.
Mullenweg does not seem to be in any sort of hurry to push the sales up rapidly, as he does not want anyone to turn his software into an article of trade, thereby destroying its open-source identity. According to Forbes.com, clarifying this status, Mullenweg said, “Part of my resistance to making it a business was that I hadn’t met someone who could meld the business side of things with my philosophy.”
