(Hosting-NewsWire.com, August 23, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- Google says that its search engine will start penalizing websites that are suspected of using the material that is copyrighted. The gesture is meant to soothe a group of media companies complaining about that issue.
On Friday, a search executive Amit Singhal said in a post on Google’s blog said that the“search algorithms” of Google that determine the rankings of the websites according to their search results and will also keep an account of the notices of copyright removal received by the Google for the specific websites.
Amit said that according to the Google results the websites sending high number of notices of removal would be lower.
Google has taken this step because it is trying to become the major distributor of services and content including video and music. This content is sold through a number of services and these services include YouTube, online-media store, and pay-TV service. The pay-TV service requires a deal with the cable networks.
Google is trying to pursue these initiatives in order to have be competitive with other media distributors, including but not limited to Apple Inc. and Amazon Inc.
A large number of companies that create and distribute content are worried about this role of Google in online privacy. Google has already been facing legal disputes with Viacom Inc., book publishers, and some other companies because of publishing unauthorized material on search engine of Google and You Tube. Google has been facing these allegations for many years.
The chair of RIAA, a representative of the music industry, said on Friday that it’s a potentially great step by Google, and is going in the right direction.
RIAA’s chair also said that they have been were urging Google to take this step for a very long time. The chairperson Cary Shermon admired the willingness of Google for giving value to the rights of the creators.
“The Motion Picture Association”, a big representative of movie studios, also said in a statement that they will follow this development by Google very closely.
The Google announced that whenever it receives any notice from any copyright holder, it will take down that unauthorized material within a period of twenty four hours. The company assures that it will a good job of policing its result. Copyright violators may even be banned from taking part in Google’s advertising network.
