(Hosting-NewsWire.com, August 18, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA - Popular online retailer, Amazon, has stated that its UK site, Amazon.co.uk has sold more eBooks than hardcover’s in 2012.
The company mentioned that the rapid growth in the digital format came about by Amazon’s Kindle device.
The figures released by the US based online giant showed that for even 100 print copies sold, 114 Kindle books were downloaded. The milestone was reached two years after the release of the Kindle e-reader in the United Kingdom.
Amazon did not release exact figures for its eBooks sales and instead, reported sales of print books along with the ration of sales in comparison to eBooks. Free eBooks were not included in the figures.
A leading British newspaper, The Guardian, spoke with an Amazon spokesman about the success of Kindle and their eBooks. The spokesperson stated that,
“As soon as we started selling Kindles it became our bestselling product on Amazon.co.uk so there was a very quick adoption. [And they] are buying four times more books prior to owning a Kindle. Generally there seems to be a love of a reading and a renaissance as a result of Kindle being launched.”
The company was ecstatic about the results and attributed the large volume of sales to the introduction of the Kindle to the UK marketplace. Vice President of Kindle in the EU, Jorrit Van der Meulen, stated that,
“Customers in the UK are now choosing Kindle books more often than print books, even as our print business continues to grow. We hit this milestone in the US less than four years after introducing Kindle, so to reach this landmark after just two years in the UK is remarkable and shows how quickly UK readers are embracing Kindle.”
As example of the success of the digital format and the Kindle reader, observers can look at the bestselling book Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James. The novel may be responsible for the large number of eBooks sales on Amazon after it sold two million digital copies since its launch, which was four months ago. With the number of Kindle users growing quickly, Amazon should also expect the sales of other titles in the downloadable format to surpass print next year.
