(Hosting-NewsWire.com, December 23, 2013 ) Waterford, MI – A Detroit marketing expert weighed in on a hot topic in the online marketing world, social media. Chris Wechner, the Director of Marketing for The Ultimate Analyst (http://www.TheUltimateAnalyst.com), claimed that most social media is causing businesses more harm than good.
The Ultimate Analyst marketing director said, “Social media can be a really powerful marketing strategy. There are so many reasons to be enamored with it, but that causes many people and businesses to feel like they have to market using social media without really having a plan or any idea, really, of how it is supposed to work.” It still is a mystery to many businesses, and Wechner continued,” So it ends up costing them a ton of money, but they spend it, because social media seems really sexy right now.”
The Detroit marketing expert explained that most people and places treat social media platforms, Facebook and Twitter in particular, like online classified ad bulletin boards. He said they make two (2) major time consuming and costly mistakes:
Social Media Mistake #1: Always promoting themselves or what they are selling.
Many places treat Facebook and Twitter like it is Craigslist, a major online classified advertising site. The idea of Craigslist is to post ads. That is not the idea behind social media platforms, like Twitter and Facebook. People want to get to be entertained and learn things. Eventually, they might buy something from someone they like and trust, but too many people make it all about them before they earn either like or trust from others.
Social Media Mistake #2: Not having a clear end result.
Many people will do a good job of being sociable on social media, but they have no place to lead them once they have that desperately sought attention. Social media needs to be part of the marketing pipeline leading people to one or more predetermined destinations and taking specific actions.
The Ultimate Analyst marketing director expanded, “Many people use social media to goof around online in the name of work. It’s goofing around, because they spend time on social media without having any idea how it could lead to a sale, vote, lead, or even an additional website visit. They just spend hours during the workday aimlessly posting and responding to others, which can be really good. However, it’s only good when that socializing leads to productive outcomes.”
“Many businesses have workers getting paid to ‘market’ on Facebook and Twitter, using useless metrics, such as “Likes” or “Followers,” but in most cases those do not pay the bills for a company.” The Detroit marketing expert continued, “Business management hears the stats about how many people are on these social media platforms and fall in love with the idea of using social media, but like any other tool, they need to be used properly. Otherwise, they will cause more destruction and cost than production and profit.”
Wechner believes that social media done correctly can really help a business, but he warns that most businesses are wasting their time and money using social media incorrectly.
