(Hosting-NewsWire.com, August 07, 2013 ) Las Vegas, Nevada -- Online businesses such as ecommerce stores and professional blogs have traditionally relied on search engine optimization (SEO) techniques to get visibility for their websites. After extensive updates to Google's search algorithm in 2012 though, these online businesses are being forced to change their strategies if they wish to rank in searches. One strategy that they are being forced to adopt is social media marketing.
Social media marketing is the practice of engaging with members of networks such as the big ones like Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest. Social media is considered a marketing strategy in its own right and can be used to drive traffic to websites and improve sales. When Google updated its algorithm last year, they decided to put more importance on social media activity for rankings. Websites which have high amounts of social activity will have a better chance of ranking in searches.
It is estimated that social media accounts for about 2% of search engine ranking factors. While this amount may seem small, it can mean a major difference in the highly-competitive world of online business. Websites which are not working on building up a presence on social media websites are likely to fall behind their competitors and lose business.
The online marketing advice website InternetMarketingandSEOConsultant.com warns businesses that they shouldn't go overboard with social media though: "Figure out which social media websites your customers actually use. Then focus on these networks. It is better to do a few networks well than blow campaigns across numerous networks by spreading yourself too thin."
