(Hosting-NewsWire.com, June 28, 2013 ) Howell, NJ -- According to recent research, newly licensed registered nurses who are verbally assaulted by their colleagues report a lower overall job satisfaction, as well as holding a less favorable perception of their work environment.
The study was conducted by the RN Work Project, which is a program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The conclusions of the study was published in the Journal of Nursing Scholarship. Researchers surveyed over 1,400 individuals who were newly licensed as nurses, finding that nearly half experienced verbal abuse. Another five percent had stated they had been abused more than five times in the previous three months.
The most frequent report of abuse was being condescend toward or wholly ignored. Those working in magnet hospitals and intensive care units reported the highest level of abuse.
The authors stated that passive-aggressive behavior was the most common form of the abuses, and stated such subtle abuse was less likely reported and more likely to be overlooked as a problem.
The research found daytime nurses as being the most abused group compared to those who worked nights and weekends. Nurses who worked in full shifts were less likely to experience abuse than those in overtime shifts (lasting 12 hours).
The research found that the abuses felt at higher levels caused a greater likelihood of an individual wanting to leave the job. Nurses that noted no verbal abuse were least likely to leave the job. Moderate to high levels of abuse were likely to say the intended to leave the job within the coming year.
Researchers noted the need for evidence-based strategies were necessary to decreased and/or eliminate verbal abuse. By eliminating unnecessary verbal assault, communication thrives and fluid synergistic between nurses and doctors or EMTs becomes more effective.
The RN Work Project is now in year 10 of newly licensed nurses. It examines turnover rates, intentions, and basic attitudes regarding the position.
