(Hosting-NewsWire.com, January 04, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Nearly every dictator has shared a common fear, and it is no opposing superpower state, United Nations, or outside military influence. The force that concerns any dictator is social media.
Originally, the concept of social media tools were used to enhance the capability of online chat forums for the young generations of America. Sites like Facebook, Twitter, and blogs were the inspirations for the necessity of social media. Now these sites have spread across the globe, being used against authoritarian leaders in each corner of the earth.
In those and many other states, the leaders attack sites tweeters and bloggers as if they were an armed force, rising against the establishment. Their repression thus spreads and it is of growing concern to many.
In India, a 21-year-old medical student posted mildly critical comments regarding a Hindu political figure who had died. Within a full day, the police had arrested both the young woman and a friend who had “liked” the Facebook comment. Both were charged with engaging in hateful and offensive speech
In Belarus, President Alexander Lukashenko, who is known as “the last European dictator” is apparently fighting the online verbiage each and every day.
Ecuador's Supreme Court turned down an extradition from Belarus for a blogger who recently fled after the government charged him with fraud. Alexander Barankov had been blogging about government corruption. The extradition denial is a bold stance against the fraud charges' absurd nature. Ecuador's President Rafael Correa and acolyte of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, are not known as champions of freedom.
Barankov is nowhere near the single example of attempted oppression. The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe noted Lukashenko's record for arrests of bloggers and journalists, stating “"unfortunately recent detentions and searches in Minsk and elsewhere in the country show continued efforts to muzzle dissenting voices and clamp down on freedom of expression online."
What is surprising to absolutely nobody, Iran is one of the toughest on social media. Bloggers are given prison terms or sentenced to death, charged with “enmity against God” and subverting national security. Stories of torture and jailing for Human-rights groups are not uncommon. In November of 2012, one such rights advocate died in custody from unreleased causes.
China spends the most money overall, doing what they can to keep social media from being able to ascertain the true repressive qualities of the Chinese Communist Party. Millions of Chinese have taken to social media in the last half-decade, in order to unearth the shape of the government.
China now spends more on internal security than it does on its own military. Those who speak against the government are jailed at a minimum.
It is just another in a long line of examples of the fear that governments have for individuals within their own country.
