(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 16, 2012 ) Redding, CA -- Those who love books now have a new go-to search engine that they can use to find thousands of literary works, catalogue names, songs, and almost anything else that is connected to books.
Small Demons is an encyclopedia and “Storyverse”, that catalogues all that a bibliophile could ever want.
The site was launched at the end of the summer, and the portal holds the world's latest in a list of groundbreaking connectivity capability on the Internet. One can search for how many books mention The Rolling Stones or Don Quixote. One can find answers to questions like 'which types of birds are cited in EL James' Fifty Shades of Grey.
"I was sure they featured `Infinite Jest,` which of course they have," author Jennifer Gilmore, whose novels include "Something Red" and "Golden Country," wrote in a recent email. "I can get deep(er) into the Wallace brain there and as I do so, learn about the context, the ether around the book. I can relent and buy Wittgenstein or `Ethan Frome` or Irving Berlin."
Valla Vakilli, former Yahoo executive and current Small Demons founder, says the idea was conceived in November of 2005. After reading “Total Chaos” by Jean-Claude Izzo, he became interested in the book's setting.
"I had a vacation planned to Madrid and Paris, and I changed my Paris leg to go to Marseilles instead," Vakili says. "I spent a week in Marseilles drinking the drinks, eating the food, and roaming the streets described in the book. I came back from that trip convinced that many of the best experiences we can find are within books. And that if we could gather them all up and put them in one place, we could unlock a world of pretty incredible discovery."
The company name is also a game of free association. Vakili cites the inspiration of Jorge Luis Borges passage that stated "is the handwriting produced by a Minor god in order to communicate with a Demon." Vakili believes that writers are “minor Gods” and demons are the passion to read and write for all persons. Thus, Small Demons is a reference to a sort of “devil in the details” mentality.
The project itself is a seeming labyrinth of categories. One can start with a large name or place or idea, and slowly work their way into the most infinitesimal passing phrase that finds its way in many stories.
Each subcategory found links to other sub-categories, and clicking on an icon such as “The Star Spangled Banner” will find a list of books mentioning it. “Don Quixote” is referred to in “Team of Rivals,” and you will locate additional background information on the Cervantes novel and a “Buy” tab will allow you the opportunity of purchasing the book on Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, or an independent store.
"[The project] was a unique approach that looked at the interior of books and provided discovery and browsing of books by utilizing fun and imaginative concepts," said Simon & Schuster`s chief digital officer, Ellie Hirschhorn.
