(Hosting-NewsWire.com, December 07, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- A privacy guide for new users went into effect at Facebook on Friday, one that complies with guidelines established by the Irish Data Protection Commissioner's Office.
The agency handles the regulatory oversight agency for our Facebook's services outside of the United States and Canada. Users signing up for Facebook for the first time will now be given specific instructions on the social networking site's default settings for individual users on all information that might be considered private.
Within the guide new users can receive specific education as they sign up to join the site. The topics covered include default settings, selecting an audience for information shared on their Timeline, and access to their data. Furthermore, information includes how they interact with applications, games, and websites, how ads work on Facebook, how tagging people and things works, and how they are able to find friends on Facebook through search and contact importers.
New users have the opportunity to review each of their privacy concerns and determine what level of security they want to establish for themselves.
Erin Egan, Facebook's chief privacy officer, said in a statement to The Washington Post that the company is "committed to making sure people understand how to control what they share and with whom" . She went on to thank the agency for its guidance "as we strive to highlight the many resources and tools we offer to help people control their information on Facebook."
The new privacy guidelines are also available for existing users to review as well, located under in Facebook Help Center. They can also review their existing settings for the information in the new privacy guide.
On the site, the company says that they have implemented these enhancements as part of their effort to increase privacy education into the new user experience. Other privacy-related changes to Facebook include inline privacy controls so that users can select an audience for their high school, college/university, and employer as they sign up for Facebook.
