(Hosting-NewsWire.com, December 07, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- The US Coast Guard is requesting assistance in locating the source of recent false distress calls that have been occurring in east Oahu. In a string of hoax calls, the most recent being on Tuesday, the call includes a child’s voice saying “Hello, hello, hello, hello. Mayday, mayday.” The voice sounded similar but not identical, to a voice heard on a recently suspended radio calls as a probable hoax. The suspension stems from the call did not have a locatable distress source. An MH-65 Dolphin Helicopter crew from the Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point in Oahu was launched to investigate the Tuesday call. No indication of distress could be located during the search prompted by the probable hoax. "This may not occur to the hoax caller, but people could die as a result of prank calls," said Commander Steve Wheeler, Sector Honolulu's Search and Rescue Mission Coordinator. "Every call received by the Coast Guard is treated as an actual distress case. So while our boats and aircraft are out searching in response to these types of fake calls, another mariner, who truly is in distress, may not get the timely assistance they require." Relaying false information in a distress call that results in the Coast Guard to attempt a rescue is a felony. The penalties include prison time, fines, civil fines, and general reimbursement to the Coast Guard for the ample costs that are incurred during the response mission. Mariners have been encouraged by the Coast Guard to help prevent such occurrences by removing radios or locking them when not in use. Other strategies include teaching children appropriate use, and helping them understand the gravity of the effect caused by what they may perceive as a harmless prank. To report suspected hoaxes, the Coast Guard is being asked to contact the Coast Guard tip line at 1-800-264-5980.
