Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Services received a slew of hoax calls on November 5, which was a busy night for safety individuals already, about out-of-control and unattended bonfires. The service warned that the hoax fire calls caused a diverging of fire engines away from individuals who really needed them. There were instances that included life-threatening situations wherein individuals truly needed urgent help. The prank calls reallocated necessary individuals and equipment away from those who truly needed it. The fire chief stated that it can be the difference between life and death for someone who is in trouble, and these calls are not only inappropriate but truly dangerous. Group Manager, Alex Johnson, Duty Manager on Bonfire Night said: “The role of our emergency call handlers is critical in any emergency. “Prank calls can take up their valuable time and keep them from genuine emergencies.” He continued, “Any hoax call is putting lives at risk and we will not tolerate our Firefighters and fire engines being sent to non-existent fires because of prank calls.” All calls to 999 emergency are recorded and the number used to make the call is displayed to the handler of the call. Any person who makes prank calls is partaking in a criminal offence, and will be prosecuted. The outcome is up to a $7,000 fine or up to six months in prison. All calls by the Derbyshire Fire * Rescue Service that is considered suspicious as a prank will be challenged with a statement “If this is a false call, we are taping your voice and will be passing this to the police, do you wish to continue?” A text message will accompany the verbal warning.
