(Hosting-NewsWire.com, October 02, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- The botched call on the Monday Night’s matchup between the Seahawks and Green Bay Packers may have cost more than just a notch in the win column for Green Bay, as an estimated $250 million in sports bets were altered due to the call.
Not surprisingly, people are a bit upset with the temporary officials who called the final play.
Gambling is always a win/lose scenario, and sports betting is entered with an understanding that one may lose their wager at the last second. However, that knowledge is predicated upon happenings on the field remaining on the up-and-up, without interference from incompetence.
What angers any gambler who falls on the losing side is when they are put there unfairly. When Russell Wilson lofted his final pass, Green Bay was ahead by five, covering a spread of 3 ½. When Golden Tate “caught” the ball for a touchdown, it gave Seattle the win and beating the spread.
ESPN.com’s John Avello, Director of The Wynn Las Vegas sports book said the total in-play bets could have been near or exceeding $150 million. Online officials put the number closer to $250 million worldwide.
According to NESN, one sports book decided to refund losers their money in the form of free play site credit. Sportsbook.com says it did so because, as one official put it, “I can’t stand winning unfairly so I am going to give punters their money back.”
While other companies may follow suit, the real problem here is the integrity lost for the NFL. When a game loses integrity due to incompetence or suspect officiating, it is harder for people to feel confident placing bets. That is the true concern for the NFL and companies that rely on the betting that stems from it.
