(Hosting-NewsWire.com, August 31, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- California Public Utilities Commission will no longer be able to take practical supervision of internet telephone service used by residents as the state’s assembly has approved a law to prevent such measure and regulations. The law is now heading back to the State Senate for concurrence and was passed on August 20, according to BNA.com.
The bill, which is officially named the ‘Senate Bill 1161’ will stall the preventive measures until 2020, a step welcomed by many technology based companies.
“Any department, agency, commission, or political subdivision of the state from enacting, adopting, or enforcing any law, rule, regulation, ordinance, standard, order, or other provision having the force or effect of law,” regulating voice over internet protocol (VoIP) and internet protocol-enabled service unless the federal government orders otherwise,” the bill reads.
A number of companies like TechAmerica, TechNet and the Silicon Valley Leadership Group were behind the bill and have praised the lawmakers for their unprecedented step, but are still in need of being reassured that such measures will be taken to ensure no interference from state departments in the future.
The bill however, will only cover VoIP and other internet based telephone technologies, but will still allow the department to have control over mediums not used under those methods. For other analysts, the bill will also not be free from criminal investigation and does not take out the authorities of such federal and state departments.
It was passed by a clear 63-12 vote in the assembly and is expected to be signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown, making California the 25th U.S. state to take such measures against uncalled for interference with online services.
For many, this is definitely a victory for free speech and power of the people.
