(Hosting-NewsWire.com, August 19, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA -- Customers in the market for IKEA furniture in Seattle, might be surprised to learn they can get a coupon applying to their purchase simply by texting ‘IKEA1.’ Once they’ve texted ‘IKEA1’ they will have joined IKEA Mobile; once joined, they will receive mobile coupons on their smartphone. These coupons can be redeemed and scanned at Seattle IKEA stores that use bCode MediaPlane technology.
bCode is a text message that will work with 99.7% of the current three billion mobiles phones worldwide. These bCodes can be scanned into bCode machines, and this scanning triggers a variety of functions. These functions include offer redemptions, access control, digital content downloads, and other mobile marketing interactions; these functions can all be accessed through your phone’s touch-screen interface.
bCode technology was first launched in Australia, and then moved into Europe where its main usage was in mobile ticketing. bCode’s chief marketing officer (CMO), Art Wagner, says that the US market is mostly in mobile coupons.
IKEA successfully tested a pilot program for several months (from January to November of 2008) and then rolled it out as a part of the Seattle IKEA Mobile program.
While most brands are happy with a 1% to 2% response for traditional offers, IKEA has seen a response of 10% to 45% at their Seattle location.
Seattle IKEA customers seem to like the new program, according to Seattle IKEA representative Casey Crook. Crook also said that customers like interacting with the program, and that most haven’t seen anything like it elsewhere.
Harrahs Casino in Las Vegas also recently added the technology. They send discount coupons to potential customers; these coupons are redeemable at the casino. According to bCode, Harrahs has seen a 10% to 25% response rate to their coupons.
Another benefit of the bCode technology is the ability to use redeemed text coupons and discounts to customize offers both timewise and geographically. CRM (customer relationship management) data is collected to build a behavioral database that can then be used to create coupons for items that customers have purchased before or shown interest in.
However, Bruce Temkin argues that these texts will eventually become a nuisance for customers. Temkin is an analyst specializing in customer experience evaluation; he works for Forrester Research in Cambridge, MA. His opinion of bCode and similar ‘can’t miss’ e-marketing technologies is that everybody falls in love with them at first because they are new and different, but after a while most people tend to see them as spam.
Despite naysayers like Temkin, companies are still interested in the technology. Two companies in New York City (Alloy and Real Content Group) are also looking into using the technology in New York City, mainly because more urban settings provide more customers who are involved in doing business with their phones. Alloy Access research found that 20% of urban dwellers use their mobile devices to connect with 50 or more people every day; the amount of non-urban dwellers doing the same is a measly 1%.
Art Wagner is currently working to implement the bCode technology with a dozen other companies as well as several agencies, both digital and media.
