This is according to Ericsson, one of the leaders in providing communications technology and services. “On the Pulse of the Networked Security”, Ericsson’s second Traffic and Market Report, says that 85% of the world’s population would enjoy internet coverage through 3G in 2017. That is close to 9 billion subscriptions. This is compared to 6 billion in 2011.
Subscriptions via machine-to-machine are also included in the number of subscriptions.
The report also says that mobile broadband subscription will reach 5 billion by 2017. This is compared to 1 billion in 2011.
Douglas Gilstrap, Ericsson’s Senior Vice President, says that people today see internet access as any mobile device’s prerequisite. This is because the demand for mobile broadband is growing. Hence, the mobile operators have already recognized this as opportunity for business. They aim to facilitate the ongoing growth and give users a good experience by faster data speeds via high capacity networks.
The report also predicted that 50% of the population will be enjoying 4G by 2017. Furthermore, smartphone subscriptions would reach 3 billion by 2017. This is compared with 700 million by 2011. The report also says that the mobile data traffic will continue to increase. In fact, it predicts that the data traffic will grow as much as 15 times from year 2011 to year 2017.
In terms of countries, China contributed most subscriptions by a single country with 39 million in 2012’s first quarter. This is followed with 25 million by India. In total, Asia Pacific has added 93 million subscriptions. This is followed with 30 million by Africa.
