(Hosting-NewsWire.com, January 06, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- A Birmingham entrepreneur has placed his website on eBay, stating that it “fills in the gaps” missed by other journalists.
Jon Bounds is a social media consultant writer, and says he began blogging a decade ago on the controversially-named website in response to the city council's bid to becoming a European City of Culture.
As Bound puts it “The council were trying to hide things and make out Birmingham was all about cafe culture which it isn't.”
"They weren't reflecting the Birmingham that people who live there are fond of and there was a complete disconnect between the media and the local people here. I set up the website to try to bridge that gap."
In the last 10 years, Birmingham: It's Not Shit, complete with a passive aggressive title, has been “mildly sarcastic since 2002” according to the site.
Bounds cites Pits 'n' Pots in Stoke-on-Trent and London's Diamond Geezer as the influences for his good-natured sarcasm when it comes to citizen journalism blogs.
Bounds also stated that 10,000 individuals visit the site each month and mentioned one of the highlights of the site was a post feature a film from actor Telly Savalas, who is famous for his role in “Kojak”, which received 10,000 hits in a single day.
Senior lecturer at Birmingham City University's School of Media, Paul Bradshaw, describes the blog as a trailblazer in the way and manner it has established itself in the United Kingdom.
He stated, "People launch blogs in response to a frustration with the limitations of the local media, they're found where people feel their local area is not being covered.”
He continued, stating, "They also tend to be less about location and more about issues rather than trying to mimic traditional patch newspapers."
Bradshaw, who founded the journalism website Help Me Investigate, stated that the city is one of the more active social media cities in the country.
"You find there are lots of postcode level blogs, arts blogs and issue-led sites but Jon's has a unique style."
