(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 24, 2012 ) Atlanta, GA -- Philips Healthcare ran a survey which found that 11% of respondents claim they would be dead or severely incapacitated if not for information they were able to locate online on particular websites. A separate study was published in the Journal of Communication which found that those who frequented Internet health sites for important or otherwise pertinent information possessed a more positive outlook on cancer prevention and diagnosis than those who did not.
The second study was performed by researchers from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Cornell and the University of Pennsylvania, who surveyed 2,489 individuals between the ages of 40 and 70. The questions ranged and regarded usage of media utilized to research information pertaining to health. The results were then weighed based upon age, gender, and other factors. Research done regarding persons' use of TV found that it had a negative effect of cancer's fatalism; yet, it appeared the internet had the opposite effect.
The study also found a striking difference in cancer fatalism amongst those who had lower education and lower quantities of health knowledge. This, according to PsyBizTech.
"Reducing cancer fatalism, especially among people with low socioeconomic status, is arguably one of the most important public health goals in the nation," lead researcher Chul-joo Lee said of the work's importance.
The Phillips survey used 1,003 U.S. Residents, with more than one-third saying they believed that health-monitoring technology was a key component for living longer and healthier.
Among the overall findings, included:
55% said they were comfortable using symptom-checker mobile apps that send data to their doctor; 52% said so of home-based vital sign monitors.
41% said they were comfortable checking their own symptoms using websites.
27% said they used those websites or home-based diagnosis technology instead of visiting their doctor.
28 % of males and 21% of females said they trust online and mobile apps as much as they trust their doctor.
