(Hosting-NewsWire.com, December 19, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- Amazon recently announced a new “Friends and Family Gifting” option, aimed at assisting consumers organize gift lists and gift ideas for their loved ones. The option also allows customers to create Facebook-enabled gift suggestions, install reminders, and share gift lists via email of their personal social networks.
The move follows in Wal Mart's footsteps, and many customers of Amazon have already used the site's Wish List feature to customize lists. Amazon also offered way to search for wish lists by entering names of friends or email addresses. The recent launch could easily be seen as more of a extension of said offers, but with more of a keen eye on the successes of the other large company.
The new partnership is not merely a revamping, however, as the new feature is in partnership with MasterCard. The push-back against Wal-Mart has more teeth because of this fact. Walmart has made it a point to revamp its e-commerce initiative, in order to compete with Amazon.
Walmart is still holding steady as the largest brick-and-mortar store, but it appears to be just as interested in the online world.
Walmart's innovation lab, @WalmartLabs, allows the company to quickly develop, test, and launch new applications, services, and general features. Such developments include Walmart.com's search engine, subscription-based commerce, and Facebook-based gift recommendations.
So, Amazon is doing what it can to go tit-for-tat with the giant company with the Facebook-enabled gift suggestion feature. The feature will allow Amazon and Facebook accounts to merge, which allows gifts to be suggested for others based upon their “likes”.
The Friends and Family feature allow users to keep important dates saved. This allows for a useful reminder system for all those dates one simply should not forget, but often does.
The Amazon feature does not simply provide lists of friends, but also unearths which already have Amazon Wishlists, and makes those friends primary above those who do not. The feature makes search for the right gifts, or avoid unnecessary ones, much easier. All of this can make Amazon feel a bit like a social network, which is good news for the company.
