(Hosting-NewsWire.com, December 19, 2012 ) San Francisco- With the recent global boom in Internet business opportunities, young Indonesians are taking advantage and not only helping to grow their own business careers, but also the GDP of the entire country.
21-year-old Internet entrepreneur, David Okto, told Khabar Southeast Asia, “I am still in my third year of college, but I am already independent and able to support my family. I found many opportunities through the internet.”
Okto currently runs a website from home, selling various consumer items including furniture, clothing, bedding and crafts.
“I started to build a website and invited all my colleagues and family through Facebook,” said Okto. “I know almost everyone now is using Facebook. Then I made a survey as to what they like to order, and I provided them with services based on the items most in demand.”
While the initial startup was rather expensive for Okto and his family, it has surely paid off.
“Internet access is quite expensive for us, especially when you use a high speed connection. But I was impressed with his ability,” said Okto’s mother. “I know not everybody has Internet access in Indonesia, but if you know your target, you will be able to use the Internet for a living.”
“For those who do not have Internet access, my approach to the market is using a cell phone. Smart phones are very popular among Indonesians, regardless of where they are living. So by maintaining my network on Facebook, I am still able to get more opportunities to run my business,” said Okto.
According to the owner of the computer store Wijaya, Wijaya Chen said that he is not surprised in the least that Indonesians especially are taking advantage of the business opportunities provided by the Internet saying, “Indonesia may be a little bit behind the United States with the idea of an online market such as Amazon, but we are improving.”
“As a matter of fact,” he said, “Sudaryatmo, the director of the Indonesian Consumers Organization (YLKI), said that Indonesia is now ranked fourth in Asia in terms of Internet use, with around 55 million users. According to him, this number jumped 30.9% from last year.”
David Okto said the biggest trouble he has with his online business is security. According to Okto, online payment processing is one of the hardest things to trust and get a good deal on because there are so many thieves and hackers out there.
“We need some sort of regulation from the Indonesian government for secure transactions. Also, we need users to be educated,” said Okto. “These two components can protect both consumers and entrepreneurs. I am sure the government will provide a policy. Hopefully, we can see this in the near future,” he said.
Many Indonesians are earning wages in one month online that they could not earn working at a normal job in Indonesia. As a global market, the Internet provides great opportunities for people, especially in underdeveloped countries, who may not have the advantages that people, for example in the United States have. The Internet is changing lives through business all around the world, and Indonesia is just one of the countries taking advantage of its advantages.
