(Hosting-NewsWire.com, December 06, 2012 ) Atlanta, GA -- Internet giant Google is pushing back against the German legislation that would require the company to pay newspapers for snippets of their articles, photographs, and other media content. German lawmakers are set to debate the situation on Thursday, as one of a list of new proposals being pushed across Europe. These proposals are being pushed through by frustrated publishers, seeking ways to keep their company’s alive during the Internet era. Google has likened the efforts to making taxi drivers pay restaurants for dropping off customers at the doors (though that analogy does not hold water, as a taxi driver would have to first offer food in the vehicle for it to make any sense). Google is now seeking to mobilize Internet users against the measure, as they argue it will hamper searchers. “For more than 10 years you’ve been able to find what you are looking for. A planned law would change that,” Google warned in a German video. There is currently an online petition that follows the video. "Such a law would hit every Internet user in Germany,” Google Germany manager Stefan Tweraser said in a statement shared with reporters. Newspapers and magazine publishers have attacked Google for “scaremongering” and creating “nasty propaganda” in a statement Tuesday, insisting that information would still be ridiculously easy to locate. Linking to articles would still be permitted under the proposal. “It’s obvious that businesses that work with other people’s content should pay for it,” said Anja Pasquay, spokesperson for the German Newspaper Publishers Assn. “Yes, Google brings a lot of traffic to newspaper pages – but they also make money from it.” The exact amount of money is yet to be made clear. The measure does not explicitly spell out the level of compensation Google or other search engines might need to shell out to supply snippets, according to Pasquay. France will be closely following the German debate, as the country is also looking at the idea as a possible life-jacket for the failing paper-news industry. Italian publishers are currently floating the idea as well.
