(Hosting-NewsWire.com, November 30, 2012 ) Concord NC -- Twenty-four-year-old Dev Basu transitioned from a marketing job to the owner of his own ecommerce company three years ago.
His business, Powered by Search, helps other businesses navigate the internet. "Online marketing really grabbed my attention since I was 17,” he said. “When I started, there wasn't a lot of information or courses. But even then, I saw a very big opportunity that could offer a different path to success."
While earning his business administration degree at the University of Toronto, Basu decided to specialize in strategic marketing. "I soon figured out there was a very deep need for online marketing related expertise in business," he said.
It turns out he was right. Today Basu oversees a team of 10 people serving a list of client companies seeking help selling their services or goods online.
Basu said he likes the quick pace and changing landscape of online marketing. "There's always something new and always a better way to do things. Websites, platforms and consumers change. So do the way people buy. It used to be desktop computers. Now it's smartphones, tablets and TV."
Those with ecommerce skills are in high demand in the business world. From the largest retailers and financial institutions to small startups, the search is on for those with a command of web-based business, including marketing and website optimization to analytics and transaction processing.
"There are many skills involved in establishing an online presence," said Tim Richardson, ecommerce professor at Seneca College and the University of Toronto.
"When people used to talk about ecommerce it was just about the transaction part and building shopping carts to buy things." Today, however, employers are seeking staff with skills that include establishing a social media presence, search engine optimization, and customer segmentation.
Still, none of that can take the place of a solid understanding of business, said Steve Tissenbaum, instructor at the G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education at Ryerson University. "You still have to have a good foundation of business concepts. While technology and IT skills help, a better start is an understanding of finance, marketing and organizational setups. A number of ecommerce courses, in fact, have been introduced into business programs."
Financial services management student at Seneca College Leon Edelman said ecommerce is a key component of the curriculum. "Ecommerce is involved in just about every business today, especially financial services. I like the fact that it brings a big value to what we're doing."
Other technical skills that aid in the job search, said Tissenbaum, include an understanding of website design and HTML.
None of the above, he added, is worth nearly as much without the ability to communicate. "To do well, it's important to be able to see the big picture and how ecommerce fits into the whole business strategy. This is about business, so you need to be able to understand what you're seeing and get your message across to other departments. In other words, you have to play nice in the sandbox and work with other teams."
Basu said he looks less at a prospective employee’s educational background than at whether he or she is curious and resourceful. "We have people with MBAs and others who started their own sites and built up their expertise through trial and error. Some learned everything first hand. Others had mentors. Some paid for course accreditations. Others simply learn free from resources like YouTube, online guides and industry conferences."
Tissenbaum said ecommerce is a great career opportunity for young people. "Businesses need young people who understand the rules of the game, who know how business and technology run and how social media works, and can bring it all together to do something interesting."
