(Hosting-NewsWire.com, November 15, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- A new University of Alberta website indicates insulting terms such as “dyke” and “faggot” appear on Twitter thousands, and sometimes millions of times a day.
Many of those who use the expressions claim not to mean anything cruel or insulting by them. Even those behind the site NoHomophobes.com, according to The Economist, do not assume those using such language intend to offend. It refers to “casual homophobia,” which is characterized by the use of phrases containing slurs that are meant in jest.
Some who recently learned of the site are put off by characterizing such language as homophobic, casual or otherwise.
“Frankly I’m tired & bored with PC garbage,” wrote one commentator on The Economist’s website.
“‘Homophobic’ is kind of a misnomer. When I call someone a dick, nobody would purport me to have a phobia of the male reproductive organ. In any case, the outcry over this kind of stuff is boring and smacks of political correctness,” wrote another.
Comments such as these cause one to wonder when political correctness became a thing to decry. After all, if a term or phrase causes offense, even unintended, shouldn’t we endeavor not to use it?
Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Yunel Escobar illustrated the callousness typical of casual homophobia when, in September, he appeared in a game with the phrase, “tu ere maricon” (or “you are a faggot”) written beneath his eyes.
Escobar said he had not intended to direct his “joke” at any specific person, adding, “I have close friends that are gay. My home decorator is gay, my hair stylist is gay and I have several friends that are gay. And they haven’t felt offended about the situation. This is just a language misunderstanding.”
Still, most would agree that Escobar’s “joke” was not very funny.
If you do not consider yourself homophobic, why use homophobic slurs at all?
