(Hosting-NewsWire.com, October 28, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- As Brooklyn grows in population, its Cablevision internet connection is slowing down by nearly 25% according to a union report.
Brooklyn-based Cablevision subscribers have nearly 15,000 Kbps download speed, compared to 20,000 in the Bronx, based on data collected by the Communications Workers of America on Speedmatters.org.
The union asked customers to check their internet speeds on the speed site in 2007 until present. This year’s data is based on 200 replied that tied Cablevision customers based on their IP address.
Cablevision responded to the report, citing comprehensive federal studies stating that the company’s speeds were without such slowdowns.
“Cablevision, which last year delivered only about 50% during the most demanding peak usage periods, in 2012 delivered better than advertised speeds across each of its speed tiers during peak periods,” the Federal Communications Commission study said.
The reports are little consolation for Elain Gordon and her family, who have noted a considerable slowdown.
“The internet is slow,” said Lefferts Garden. “And I just bought a new computer, so it can’t be the computer.”
The company is claiming it has not forgotten about or hindered their Brooklyn customers. The company stated they recently spent $140 million to upgrade broadband networking and currently offers multiple levels of serving, including a 101 Mbps downstream service, complete with 15 Mbps upstream.
The noted speed problems only compound Cablevision's growing difficulties, as a group of unionized tech workers are in the midst of a contract battle with the company’s bosses. Over 400 tech workers, dispatchers, and warehouse workers are demanding better pay and benefits.
Over 100 workers under contract with Cablevision currently do not receive health benefits. Many are placed on a sliding pay scale, based upon each call. Some workers earn as little as $20,000 per year, according to union officials.
“They work in poverty installing Cablevision boxes for a very large corporation,” union organizing coordinator Tim Dubnau said.
