(Hosting-NewsWire.com, October 15, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- Eighth-grader Maraena Black is attempting to establish a Bible group at Summit Middle School.
The 13-year-old student is attempting to gain support from students, faculty, and parents. Johnston told the school board members on Monday that there are, by her count, 50 people interested in the “Oasis” club.
“We’re a student-led, on-campus, interdenominational support network,” Maraena stated. “Our teaching source will be the bible and will be promoting school activities.”
The group’s activities will include the Kind Campaign, food drives, and other such events.
“We’re here to follow Christ and not only respect ourselves, but others as well,” she told the board. “We’re teaching self-value, we’re going against bullying and going against the negative things in our school and doing it through the Bible and through Christ.”
The club would reportedly be open to anyone in the schools as Black plans to have the organization flow through all schools if it is given the go-ahead by the school board’s approval process.
“It’s very easy to see the passion you have in this,” board president Mike Farrell stated. “You’re very well organized.”
Farrell also stated a vote on the approval of the Oasis group would come at the end of October.
Lexi Shafer, a technology and business teacher was asked to advise Black at the middle school.
“I think it will provide another positive opportunity for kids to get involved,” Shafer said. “I think it will be a good place where kids can feel comfortable and talk about things that they may not talk about during school.
The group's meetings would involve worship songs, bible discussion, as well as prayer requests. Meetings would take place before school on Mondays, as well as after school on Wednesdays.
