(Hosting-NewsWire.com, October 08, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- The decision to expand legal betting on professional football games, in Delaware, is expanding far past casinos and flowing into bars and restaurants, which seems to be paying off for the owners, as well as the state.
According to lottery officials, sales of football parlay cards were up approximately 40% last month, compared to the same time frame as 2011. Participants bet around $263,000 through the last weekend in August, a recording period that included three weeks of NFL preseason games. Vernon Kirk, State Lottery Director, noted that this year is showing stronger signs of gain compared to last year’s preliminary revenue figures. The total sales reached $2.4 million in the two opening weeks of the NFL season, which was a 52% increase. Fifteen percent of those parlay card sales came from non casino retailers.
Just shy of six weeks after Delaware Gov. Jack Markell signed legislation which was to expand the outlets for sports betting, upwards of thirty-one taverns and eateries throughout Delaware began to sell the state’s NFL parlay cards (three or more bets on games’ outcomes that pay only if all the picks are winners.) For those who run the restaurants, the accumulation of foot traffic from bettors is substantial, regardless of the mear 5% commission retailers make on parlay sales.
Paul Ogden, owner of the Famous Tavern chain in northern New Castle County stated, “This is not for the big-time gambler. It’s for me and you, neighbors going to the local pub and, for the heck of it, putting down two bucks.” Four out of the five locations of Ogden’s have sports betting retail terminals installed inside. Ogden has also mentioned that he has obtained some further expenses in preparing for sports betting at his bars, including a new bill for subscriptions to an NFL television package that includes live broadcasts of every game.
The law not only allows expansion of sports betting but also legalizes online casino gambling in Delaware, which the Delaware Lottery Office administers through the websites of the state’s three casinos. By creating this law, Delaware is hoping to stay one step ahead of neighboring states where legal gambling is already expanding expeditiously. According to USA Today, Delaware is the only state east of the Rockies that legally can operate a sports betting scheme under federal law though the state’s offerings are limited to parlays on three or more NFL games. This new law will help to bring in $7.75 million in new state revenue this fiscal year.
