(Hosting-NewsWire.com, October 07, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- It is a commonly acknowledge fact that at any American Hockey League game, there may be scouts in the stands; however, the Rochester Amerks will not have to wonder at the start of their season, as Buffalo Sabres’ coaches will be aiding the team’s early-season coaching.
The additional interest from the coaches is clearly due to the fact that the lockout has impeded their ability to coach. Thus, staff member, including Coach Lindy Ruff and his assistants James Patrick, Kevyn Adams, and Teppo Nummien will be periodically helping with Amerks coaching.
“Marcus (Foligno), Luke (Adam), Cody Hodgson, you want to spend time with them,” Ruff said, “and we want to evaluate the young guys, too; guys like (Jerome) Gauthier-Leduc and (Mark) Pysyk.” At the same time, Ruff said he doesn’t want to be intruding on what Amerks coach Ron Rolston and assistants Chadd Cassidy and Chris Taylor are doing. “There’s a fine line, there is,” Ruff admitted. “As I told Ron yesterday, ‘It’s your camp, it’s your team. You set it up the way you want.’ ”
Ruff also spent considerable time in Rochester during the 2004-2005 lockout and was even on the ice during practice. There he was able to view Ryan Miller mature as a goalie, and see firsthand the growing skills of Thomas Vanek and Jason Pominville.
“Being around the team gave me a real appreciation for what those players can do,” Ruff said. “There’s nothing like getting on the ice and being able to evaluate guys. For me, it was invaluable.”
Ruff is likely to spend less time this during this lockout than in 2004-2005 as discussion are ongoing this time. His assistants will likely spend more time helping him compile skill-development notes during practice.
“Every player has a gift and they also have areas to improve,” Ruff said. “You like to concentrate on the gift but you also like to bump up the areas that need work.” Rolston said he is more than willing to share the coach’s whistle. “They’ll be on the ice and they’ll also be watching from the stands,” he said.
