(Hosting-NewsWire.com, October 07, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- Brad Marchand was signed to a $18 million, four-year deal with the Boston Bruins on Friday. The team announced the deal, which kicks in after the upcoming season and allows Marchand to remain a Bruin through the 2016-2017 season.
"I just want to thank the Jacobs family and the Bruins organization for allowing me the opportunity to be part of the team for this year and four more years," said Marchand on a Bruins website. "It's an honor to be part of this organization and I'm very excited for what the future may hold for the Bruins. The forward could not be contacted via call as he was on a hunting trip with his father.
Marchand, 24, has spent two seasons with the bruins, wherein he has amassed 55 points on 28 goals and 27 assists. His rookie season was his strongest, as he registered 41 points, and was a pivotal part of the Bruins winning the Stanley Cup.
"His style of play, his persona, his timely goals and his amount of goals bring a great component to the Bruins and the Bruins organization," Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli said in a conference call with the media Friday. "It's nice when you sign players to an extension -- and yes you say a lot of nice things about the player when you do -- but it's nice when you can sign a player like Brad who has worked his way up through the organization and plays the way we all enjoy watching him play. As a general manager you enjoy watching him play that in your face game. He sacrifices his body and he's really coming into his own as an offensive player."
The new deal gives Marchand an addition $1 million per year compared to his old contract. The Bruin would become a restricted free agent at the end of the season.
Beginning in the 2013-2014 season, Marchand will be among the highest paid forwards on the team. David Krejci and Patrice Bergeron are both making marginally more money. Marc Savard is also set to make $5 million next season, but has been unable to play since January 2011, and is unlikely to be allowed to suit up again due to post-concussion syndrome.
