(Hosting-NewsWire.com, October 20, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- Users are being warned to beware of a predator claiming to help Microsoft users with their computers. According to the Teaneck Police Department, the scammer attempts to acquire access to user computers by offering a repair service to them.
The scam became public when Microsoft Windows users began receiving calls by someone claiming to work for Microsoft. The victims became entangled in the trapped when the caller asked them if their computers were running slow. The caller then attempted to convince the users that their computers could possibly be infected with a virus.
In an attempt to save their documents from a scam, users listened to the caller, who walked them through a few steps. The instructions ultimately allowed the scammer access to the victim’s computer. Some victims were also financially targeted, as the caller often requested payment for the bogus repair.
Police warn residents that this kind of interaction could allow the scammer access to the victim’s personal information stored on their computers. Police also encourage residents to report any such phone calls and to document the name of the company which is given, along with their location and phone number.
In a statement regarding the events, Microsoft stated, “Cybercriminals often use publicly available phone directories so they might know your name and other personal information when they call you. They might even guess what operating system you're using,”
